Located in the northwestern part of Spain, León is the capital and largest municipality of the province of León, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. The city was once the capital of the Kingdom of León, and was an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago.
León is particularly known for its Gothic churches and other famous historical buildings, as well as for its architectural remains, mainly from the Romanesque and Medieval periods, and for the festivals and events that take place throughout the year, attracting national and international tourists. The Cathedral of León, the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of León, was built on the site of an ancient Roman bathhouse from the 2nd century A.D. It is a masterpiece of 13th-century Gothic architecture, and was classified as a Spanish cultural heritage site in 1844. The city is home to several museums, including the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de León (MACL), which opened in 2005 and focuses on contemporary art, and the Museo de León, which houses the city's collections from prehistoric times to the Roman, medieval and contemporary periods.
