Nanyang Siang Pau (NSP), a Chinese daily newspaper, was founded on 6 September 1923 in Singapore by the late Mr. Tan Kah Kee, highly regarded in China as a “hero to the overseas Chinese”.

It was Tan’s belief that a nation’s prosperity depends upon education, which in turn cannot be run successfully without the knowledge of modern business administration. No country can advance if there is no proper education infrastructure.

Tan turned to journalism precisely to encourage teaching and learning, as well as to preserve Chinese culture. He would not hesitate to spend his last cent for the promotion of public welfare. Resolving to devote all his fortune for education, he earned a reputation that lives on to this day.

In its early days, NSP had its publication suspended twice. The first instance took place just 23 days after its appearance, when the British colonial government ordered its suspension on grounds of “involvement in party politics”. Printing was resumed in the following year on 1 February. Subsequent to the outbreak of the Pacific War on 8 December 1941, it ceased publication again for 3 years and 7 months and did not reopen until 8 September 1945.

The Malayan edition of the then Singapore-based NSP made its debut in Kuala Lumpur in 1962. At the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965, NSP split into two corresponding local editions. The Singapore editions of NSP and Sin Chew Jit Poh merged into Lianhe Zaobao in 1983, ever since then NSP has been a genuine Malaysian newspaper.

In 1989, NSP became the first Chinese daily to be listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE).

1993 saw the acquisition by Nanyang Press, the parent company of NSP, of a full stake in China Press and Life Publishing to form the largest Chinese-language press group in Malaysia.

With the advent of the information age, NSP took the lead in 1996 to launch its website, publishing electronic news on the Internet.

A decade later, Tan Sri Datuk Sir Tiong Hiew King, a businessman, purchased the entire stock of Nanyang Press and rose to become its largest shareholder.

23 April 2008 marked the merger of Nanyang Press, Sin Chew Media and Ming Pao Enterprise to create Media Chinese International, the first entity dually listed in Malaysia and Hong Kong, as well as a world-leading Chinese-language press group.

Having established a clear positioning, NSP supplies and fulfills the reading needs of professionals, managers, executives and businessmen. It boasts two major selling points, i.e. the most comprehensive business information and the fastest international news.

In the fast-changing era of technology, NSP commenced the publication of its electronic newspaper in honour of its 90th anniversary in 2013, and introduced eNanyang.my, a news portal that is more functional on mobile devices, in 2015.
